A Little Adventure in Los Angeles
My friend and I spontaneously decided to go on a trip on June. We bought our plane tickets 3 days before our flight. We left Montreal at 3pm in the afternoon and arrived at LAX at 12:00 am. Yes, that’s right! We went from the city of Montreal all the way to Los Angeles. It was our first time to go on a trip by ourselves. Our minds were filled with excitement! We were convinced that everything would go as planned as soon as we landed in LA. We were wrong…
There was some misunderstanding regarding the time of our arrival. The owner of the place we booked misunderstood 12 am to 12 pm. Anyway! We basically looked like lost kids as we walked around frantically looking for someone who would be kind enough to let us borrow their cell phone (thankfully some strangers were nice) at the airport in order to contact the owner to help us… The owner suggested that we go to a jjimjilbang (찜질방) in Koreatown, which was located “near” her house.
What is a jjimjilbang? It’s a Korean sauna that is open 24/7.
So, we took a taxi from the airport to the jjimjibang. Oh boy… That cost us around $50 right off the bat! We actually didn’t have the exact address of the spa… So, we asked the driver to drive along the street. The driver was very nice and helped us out as much as he could until we found the sauna. Once we arrived at the sauna, we were so relieved! But, with our “wonderful luck” that night… The sauna was about to CLOSE! Thank goodness, they let us use their telephone for a bit to contact the owner of the house again. Anyways, she felt bad and finally let us stay in her living room just for the night. So, we walked about 6 long blocks to get to her place.
Please keep in mind that it was almost 2 am. Two young female novice travellers walking in a dark unfamiliar place.
Yeah… We were scared to death! We had various reasons to be scared at that time. (Sketchy place & random cars stopping…)
Thankfully, we arrived at the place safely — we actually ended up running with our carry on bags as we searched for the house because there were some suspicious strangers around the are — & were able to take some rest.
We woke up pretty early. We decided to explore the area to buy some necessities & find a place to eat because we were starving!
We did A LOT of walking that morning. I guess it was a good morning exercise. We were basically just 2 lost kids trying to find something interesting to do. We saw a lot of Korean BBQ restaurants, acupuncture clinics, massage clinics & much more in almost every block. We walked and walked, while the sun shined on us more and more. The heat intensified as we walked further away from where we came from. Compared to the cold rainy weather of Montreal at that time, LA was blazing hot! If I had to describe how we felt at that moment… it was as if we were going to melt!
Finally we settled at a mall & had our first meal of the day. The portion was actually HUGE!!
It definitely filled our stomachs. It was good! If I remember correctly, it is called Omurice (오므라이스) –> Omlette Rice
We found it pretty interesting to walk around Koreatown.
My friend and I were talking about how we felt like we were back in time!
We were also a bit surprised upon seeing how unkept the streets were!
Nonetheless, there’s something about the place that trigger one’s curiosity.
We asked around if there was any cinema nearby. We were directed to CGV cinema.
To our surprise… They were only showing 2 movies! So, we decided to just roam around again.
We ended up eating Patbingsu (팥빙수) — A korean shaved ice dessert with various toppings. It was delicious!
Because we were feeling adventurous that day. We decided to choose a different path to go back to the place we were staying.
We somehow ended up in a sketchy place… Though, I was very thankful that I’m quite good with directions & we were able to find our way back!
That’s all for now!
Have a good day! 🙂
